“This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals—sounds that say listen to this, it is important.”—
So after much anticipation I went to see The Hunger Games Movie at the IMAX last night and I’d like to say I think they did an excellent job in following the book. The actors and actresses they chose definitely made the film, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta was especially well selected - whereas when reading the first book I had been a bit unsure about Peeta to begin with, Josh made me love him a lot quicker. Caesar and the Capitol were great to see, and Effie’s look was fabulous too, though thought it was a shame they missed out Haymitch drunkenly falling off the stage during the Reaping xD I’d say the only true criticism I have is the over-use of crazy camera work, as particularly in IMAX this was a bit dizzy-making and in some of the fight scenes I wanted to get a better look at what was happening. Overall though I think this was one of the best examples of successfully translating a novel to the big screens. They told the story well enough so that for those who hadn’t read the book (but really really should have!) it wouldn’t be too confusing, though obviously I still think it speaks more as a film to those who have read it :) I didn’t feel they cut out anything truly important, there were only little things I missed such as Madge, the Avox girl, and some of Katniss and Peeta’s dmc’s etc. but it is understandable that they had to cut these out. Rue and Prim were adorable, and the scenes when Katniss left for the Games were particularly moving. Similarly to in the book Gale didn’t play a huge part which is an understandable shame, but I liked how they cut to his reaction at certain moments during the televising of the Games. Also similarly to Josh’s beautifully crafted jawline, Liam Hemsworth definitely won the gene pool lottery, another downside to his lack of screen time. I think the only opportunity the film makers missed out on were the wolf mutts in the finale of the Hunger Games. I mean they were pretty nasty to look at and their first entrance made my heart skip a beat in one of those you-know-it’s-going-to-happen-but-not-when moments, similar to your toast finally popping but a lot tenser, louder and digitally enhanced, and I liked the way they presented the Gamemaker’s control room. However, they completely missed out the whole reason these mutts were so freaky in the first place - their human qualities. I know the whole realisation that each one was like a dead tribute may have taken too much time, but they could have utilised other qualities such as the human eyes, and beckoning each other forward. The lack of this made the final scene seem a bit anti-climatic but this definitely wasn’t a deal-breaker :) That’s all I can think of regarding the film for the moment, what I definitely know is that it’s going to be a long wait for the second film, but I’m sure it will be worth it. Especially cannot wait to see who they cast as Finnick since they’ve cast everyone else so well. At the moment I’m trying to convince my brother to read the books, and if I’m successful I’ll have an excuse to go see the film again - if I have enough money that is :)
"May the odds be ever in your favour!"
oh and stop all of this ‘Team Gale’ ‘Team Peeta’ nonsense before it gets out of control. that is all x
